A police sergeant who rushed to the assistance of a partner who was ambushed by a knifeman was granted the King's Commendation for Valor.

Sgt Tim Ansell fought with 27-year-old Jacob Brown after he placed a knife to the neck of his partner Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown began the violence as the officers and their third officer, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking to a driver after a road collision in the area in summer 2023.

Brown stabbed and slashed both Sergeant Ansell and Sergeant Foster prior to PC Wolstencroft stunned him with a Taser.

"Officer stabbed," the officer stated over his communication device.

Officer-mounted and vehicle camera video shared by the force showed Brown, who was dressed in dark clothing with a head covered, run up to Sgt Foster from the rear with a blade outstretched.

He struck the officer who lost balance and fell to the pavement, after which Sergeant Ansell stepped in and tried to wrestle him to the ground despite being multiple times hit with the knife.

PC Wolstencroft drew his Taser and waited for a open target, concluding the struggle to an end.

Sergeant Ansell can be heard to say: "I need something on my neck now, I got knifed in the neck."

Sergeant Ansell sustained multiple open wounds to his throat and further cuts to his arms and torso, whereas Sergeant Foster experienced slash wounds.

The department stated Sergeant Foster used his bare hands to stem his partner's hemorrhaging before emergency responders arrived.

The new award comes after the trio of policemen received departmental Courage Honors in fall 2023 and the police federation award from the local union branch in April 2024.

They further earned a Regional Courage Honor in summer 2024.

"The efforts of all three officers ultimately protected each other and meant no civilians suffered any injuries."

Brown received a sentence to an psychiatric detention in early 2024, per authorities.
