The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
