Governor Noem Inspects Oregon Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office With MAGA Influencers

Kristi Noem, acting as the head of the Department of Homeland Security, conducted a tour the ICE location in the city of Portland on this week. During her visit, she saw firsthand a small demonstration outside, which stands in stark contrast to the dramatic "blockade" claimed by former President Donald Trump.

Joined by Right-Wing Media Figures

Governor Noem was accompanied by a group of MAGA-aligned personalities who were whisked from the Portland airport to the ICE office in her motorcade. DHS has published more aggressive digital updates showing federal personnel performing enforcement operations and firing crowd control measures at crowds.

Gathering Outside

Officers established a perimeter outside the ICE office in the Portland's waterfront district before the governor's visit. A small group individuals, including one dressed as a fowl and another as a baby shark, were held back.

Audio played loudly from a protest encampment close by, with a refrain about Donald Trump and Epstein files. One protester called out to a federal recorder documenting from the roof, challenging whether the DHS had been referred to as the "ministry of propaganda".

Media Access

Reporters from independent publications were also kept at the barrier outside, while the MAGA-aligned figures in her party—Benny Johnson, Nick Sortor, and David Media—posted digital content of the governor leading federal officers in a prayer session inside, delivering a pep talk, and advising a soldier of the Oregon National Guard to "Be ready".

Recent Rulings

Noem has previously echoed the former president's allegations that the handful of individuals—who have gathered in their limited groups outside the site since June, including one in an frog outfit—are "radicals" who have placed the building "in a state of siege", making the use of DHS agents essential.

But, on Saturday, a court official in Portland halted Trump’s effort to nationalize local militia, stating that the Trump's assertions that the largely peaceful city was "burning to the ground" were "not based on reality".

The next day, the judge, Judge Immergut—who was selected to the court by Trump—extended the decision to prevent guard members from elsewhere from being deployed in Portland. She acted after he answered to her previous decision by seeking to send members of the California's guard to the state.

Rising Conflicts

After the former president highlighted the limited yet ongoing demonstration outside the office and made unsubstantiated allegations that the city is "war ravaged", a growing number of his followers, including conservative personalities, have arrived to confront the protesters.

Some of these clashes have caused scuffles and physical fights, prompting apprehensions by the Portland police. A conservative personality was among those arrested after he attempted to push through a gathering on a walkway near the site and was part of an altercation over an national banner. He had previously seized the banner from a demonstrator who was setting it on fire.

Legal accusations against the influencer were later dropped after an outcry in right-wing outlets induced the chief of the legal unit of the DOJ, Harmeet Dhillon, to warn of a probe of the law enforcement agency over alleged partisan treatment.

The two women Sortor was involved in an altercation with still are under legal scrutiny.

Official Responses

On Sunday, Oregon’s governor, she, alleged DHS agents in the office of trying to antagonize the protesters by using unnecessary levels of tear gas in a populated area and inviting conservative social media influencers to document the gathering from the upper level of the facility. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," she commented.

A trio of those right-wing personalities were referred to in a police report last month as "counter-protesters" who "repeatedly come back and harass the protesters until they are attacked or subjected to spray" and refuse "frequent warnings from officers to avoid" the group.

Online Content

One influencer, a former journalist who reinvented himself as a right-wing commentator after being dismissed from a media outlet for ethical violations, published video of Noem observing from the upper level of the site at the small group of protesters below, including a protest organizer who sports a bird outfit to taunt Donald Trump. Johnson captioned the footage of her viewing the calm environment below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".

Regardless of the disconnect between the allegations from both officials that this facility is "encircled" from "homegrown extremists" and obvious footage of a small number of demonstrators in harmless costumes, the figures with Noem continued to describe the demonstrators as harmful activists.

Official Engagement

While in Portland, Noem also held a discussion with the city's top cop, Chief Day, who has been portrayed as "politically correct" in partisan press for permitting his officers to arrest the influencer. In a online post on the discussion, Benny Johnson asserted that the police head had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants confronting journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Noem’s motorcade then exited the office past a small group of protesters on the street outside, including one wearing a animal wearing a headgear.
