Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
