2026 Dubbed the Age of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's rising status in the broader culture is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of unique mechanics.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.

If these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
